Why Hillary Clinton's not moving into the White House in 2009 -- or Ever

New York magazine had a cover story (5/29/06) about Sen. Hillary Clinton's upcoming presidential campaign. I responded with the following:

"Hillary Clinton won’t be elected president in 2008. Not because she’s a woman or controversial, but because she’s fighting 2 trends in American politics.

First, Americans don’t elect presidents from outside the South and West. The last president elected from outside those regions was John Kennedy, in 1960. That will change one day. But not in 2008.

Even bigger is that we don’t elect presidents who are senators. Every senator probably has a dream of becoming president. But the last one was -- again -- John Kennedy. Before that, Benjamin Harrison, in 1888.

To be elected president , Clinton would have to overcome both trends. It’s not going to happen."
